Some people play sports in which their body weight needs to be in a certain range by the end of the offseason in order to compete.īut there's a large number of people who genuinely would benefit from just maximizing their performance at their current body weight and/or slowly grow into a slightly heavier or lighter body weight. Other people need to cut their body weight down and they are so used to overeating that they need to actively try to cut down.

Some people absolutely need to "bulk." They have spent a long time being in the habit of under-eating and, if they want to achieve any of their goals (both aesthetic and performance-wise) they are going to have to actively work at gaining weight and learn to eat accordingly. To add to this, I think the other thing at play is that everyone wants an absolute answer about what's best to do and the fact is that it really depends. There is another way, and if you don't need those quick results, you can take a more measured approach to your training. So they're attracted to bulking/cutting cycles. Long term fitness like Jeff is into is not what people are talking about here: they want to know what to do right now to gain muscle and lose weight.

ATHLEAN X BULKING AND CUTTING FULL

Long story short, this sub is full of people who are attracted to the speed of bulking and cutting. That's a slower process, and it's closer to recomping (though I still think of it as bulking, because I'm eating more). The scale still isn't moving, but I'm becoming more lean and gaining visible muscle as my numbers go up. I'm eating a bit more than usual now, but that's because I'm lifting heavy and doing cardio and my body is requesting more food. I have plenty of time I don't need to cut/bulk for the beach season. You rarely hear people on this sub talking about this kind of longterm fitness. Looking good is great, but it's low on the list of priorities for me and more of a nice added bonus to what I'm doing. I have a bunch of other reasons too, but these are my main reasons. Also, I workout to improve my capabilities at sports I enjoy. I'm in the best shape of my life right now and I'm only getting better. I want to be a vital person, and a capable man as I age, not decline. When my kids are running around playing like crazy, I want to have the energy and ability to join in with them. I don't want to be hobbling around in twenty years, I don't want to be inflexible, immobile, and weak. I started going to the gym immediately after I noticed I was developing a belly from being sedentary and not taking care of my body. I'm not interested in that anyway, because I work out for non-cosmetic reasons. I'm married, and my wife isn't really into the bodybuilder look and has asked me repeatedly not to go down that road. Other people are cutting from being overweight, so there's a lot of talk about cutting weight here in general and the other side of that coin is bulking. You can see why bulking/cutting appeals to them, because it is a fast track to the beach bod. So you have a group of mostly young people, who want to look good with few or no clothes on, and who are just getting into fitness. Also, this sub is full of beginners who are just starting out - you see a lot of transformation posts, and not a lot of posts about training for five years. If you're bulking, you're doing it to "look better naked" which is what a lot of people on this sub are after through their workouts. Most people here seem either to want to lose weight because they are overweight, or to lose weight to be shredded for that beach bod. Most people here are young, in their teens or twenties. Look at the tone of this sub though, and you'll see why so many here advocate bulking and cutting. What you do depends on what you want out of your workout. There isn't going to be a single answer to this question.
